Maine Cast & Blast: Grouse Hunting & Fly Fishing Trips

TWO TRADITIONS, ONE TRIP

line-3

The Maine Cast & Blast

Maine offers a dilemma for the outdoorsman: The grouse are drumming in the coverts, but the brook trout are also aggressively feeding before winter. At Thibodeau Outdoor Adventures, we believe you shouldn't have to choose. Our Maine Cast and Blast Trips combine the thrill of upland bird hunting with the serenity of river fishing into one seamless, adrenaline-filled day.

This is the quintessential Maine sporting experience. Imagine starting your morning with the smell of gunpowder and the flush of a Ruffed Grouse, then swapping your shotgun for a fly rod to drift dry flies over rising trout as the afternoon sun warms the water. It is a long day, a hard day, and absolutely the best day you will spend in the woods this year.

Morning: The "Blast" (Upland Hunting)

  • Target: Ruffed Grouse (Partridge) and American Woodcock.
  • The Action: We start early, hitting the logging roads and covers of Central Maine. The birds are often active in the morning, moving from roosts to feed.
  • The Terrain: We hunt prime covers that we have scouted extensively—abandoned orchards, alder runs, and young aspen stands.

Afternoon: The "Cast" (River Fishing)

  • Target: Brook Trout, Landlocked Salmon, and Rainbow Trout.
  • The Action: As the air warms up, aquatic insects become active. We transition to the river—often wading or floating nearby sections of the Kennebec or Sandy River.
  • The Technique: Fall fishing is spectacular. The brook trout are in their spawning colors. We typically use streamers or dry flies during the afternoon hatch.
