State Heritage Fish Waters

Water That Has Never Been Stocked

Some water in Maine has never been stocked. Never will be. Maine designates a small number of ponds and rivers as State Heritage Fish Waters — protected, hard to reach, and holding wild, naturally reproducing trout. Most see a handful of anglers a season.

We guide these waters for wild brook trout, rainbow trout and the elusive Arctic char (blueback trout), a fish that survives in only a dozen or so lakes on earth, all of them in Maine. Getting in can mean a hike, a paddle and some real navigation. We handle the logistics, the gear and the route.

  • From $500One-day trip, all meals included
  • Wild fish onlyNever stocked, naturally spawning
  • Arctic charPlus wild brook & rainbow trout
  • Overnight optionTrue wilderness camping, off-grid

These trips require advanced planning and are subject to seasonal weather conditions. We fish trout from ice-out to mid-July and mid-September to the close of the season, and rest the trout water from July 15 to September 15.
