Season & Permits
Maine moose season and permit information
A guided moose hunt starts with a permit, and the permit comes from the state lottery rather than from us. You cannot buy your way into a Maine moose hunt, which is exactly what keeps it worth doing. Here is how the cycle works.
How the lottery runs
Applications are taken online only, in the spring, and the drawing follows in June with results posted the same evening. In 2026 the window ran from 1 April to 18 May, the drawing was held on Saturday 20 June at the Acton Fairgrounds, and winners had until 16 July to pay for the permit.
Expect 2027 to run on a broadly similar rhythm, but the dates are not published yet, so confirm them against the official MDIFW moose permit page rather than planning around our summary.
How many permits there are
For the 2026 seasons the state issued 3,705 permits in total, spread across the separate hunts and the wildlife management districts. Residents take the large majority of those, with a capped share going to non-residents and a small allocation to hunting lodges.
Odds move every year with the number of applicants and with how permits are allocated district by district. Most hunters who draw have been applying for years.
When the hunts happen
Maine runs several separate moose hunts rather than one long season, and your permit names the one you are in. In 2026 the first bull hunt ran 28 September to 3 October, the second 12 to 17 October, and the antlerless hunt 26 to 31 October.
Your week is fixed by the permit, which is why our moose calendar fills within days of the results going up.
Which districts we hunt
We guide moose hunts in WMDs 4, 7, 8, 9 and 14. If you draw a permit for any of those, get in touch and we will talk you through what that week usually looks like on the ground.
If you draw elsewhere, tell us anyway. We would rather be straight with you about whether we are the right outfit for the country you drew than take the booking regardless.
The best time to talk to us is before you apply, so we can talk through which districts suit the hunt you want. If you draw, we are already planned. If you do not, nothing is lost. For how the chances system works, what the permit costs and why buying multiple chances matters, read our guide to navigating the Maine moose permit lottery.

What does a guided Maine moose hunt cost?
The six-day fully guided hunt is $3,500 for the permit party, which covers both the permittee and the sub-permittee.
How long is the hunt and what is included?
Six full days, Monday through Saturday, with daily field lunches and drinks. We scout ahead of your week, call, and handle the extraction and the heavy lifting.
Which zones do you guide moose hunts in?
We hunt WMDs 4, 7, 8, 9 and 14. Tell us the zone printed on your permit and we will talk through what that week usually looks like.
Do I need a permit to book?
Yes. Maine moose hunting is by permit only, drawn in the state lottery. Our calendar fills immediately after results are posted in June, so contact us as soon as your name comes up.
