Choosing a Maine Guide for Fishing
Maine fishing guides are not interchangeable. The licence is the same, but what someone actually does with it varies enormously — and picking the wrong fit is the most common reason a trip disappoints.
The licence is real
A Registered Maine Guide holds a state licence issued by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, with a separate classification for fishing. It requires a written examination and an oral board. Guiding for hire without one is illegal in Maine. Ask; it is a fair question and any legitimate Maine fishing guide expects it.
Boat guide or wade guide
Some guides work from a boat, some walk you into water, and the skills only partly overlap. A canoe trip on Messalonskee, a float down the Kennebec and a morning wading a brook trout stream are three different days out. Say which you want, or describe the day you are imagining and let the guide tell you what fits.
Fly, spin, or hardwater
Maine fly fishing guides, open-water bass guides and ice fishing guides are often different people. We hold all three, which is why we can put a family on pickerel through the ice in February and a fly angler on native brook trout in May.
What to ask before you book
- Which waters do you actually fish? A guide who names specific ponds and knows their seasons is telling you something a general answer cannot.
- What is included? Rods, terminal tackle, bait, lunch and boat time vary between guides. Your Maine fishing licence is your responsibility.
- Is this trip suitable for a beginner or a child? Be honest about experience — the right guide will change the water rather than the expectations.
- What is the plan if the weather turns? On open water in Central Maine, wind decides more days than rain does.
- Half day or full day? With children or first-timers, a good half day beats a long one almost every time.
Where we fish
We are based in Oakland, on the outlet of Messalonskee Lake, and guide across the Belgrade Lakes chain, the Kennebec Valley, and the remote water around the Jackman region and Rangeley. That range is the point: when one water is blown out or fishing poorly, we move rather than make the best of it.
